1986 Mosrite Joe Maphis Double Six string+Octave Guitar.

This 'Prototype # 001' Joe Maphis double-neck (conventional six-string neck in the lower position combined with an octave six-string neck in the upper position) weighs 11.40 lbs. This guitar was specially made by Semie Moseley in 1986 and is inscribed by him on the back of each headstock. The regular six-string neck has a nut width of just over 1 11/16 inches, a medium profile and a scale length of 24 1/2 inches; the octave six-string neck has a nut width of 1 3/4 inches, a very fast thin profile and a scale length of 14 3/4 inches. Two-piece maple body with scalloped edge (15 inches wide and just over 1 3/4 inches deep) and a 7/8 inch wide center-strip of walnut. Two one-piece maple necks, both with  single bound slab-rosewood fretboards. The conventional guitar has a zero fret + 22 original medium frets, small inlaid double & triple clay dot position markers and a white headstock decal "M Mosrite J.M. 65". The serial number "PRO 001" is stamped in blind beyond the 22nd fret of the regular guitar. The octave guitar has a zero fret + 19 original medium frets and small inlaid double & triple clay dot position markers and a white headstock decal "M MOSRITE / Joe Maphis". Both necks with unique Mosrite 'M' shaped headstocks with specific 'Maphis' inlays of white and black ivoroid plastic and individual 'Kluson Deluxe' tuners with oval metal buttons. Two early style Mosrite single-coil (covered) pickups with black plastic covers stamped with "Mosrite of California" and black plastic surrounds. The outputs of these two pickups on the regular guitar are 5.86k and 5.87k. One Mosrite 'humbucking' pickup with stained-maple surround and an output of 19.44k on the octave guitar. Specific three-layer white over black plastic pickguard with decorative cut-outs and bevelled edges secured by eight screws. Two controls (one volume and one tone) plus two 'mini' three-way pickup selector switches (one for each of the six string guitar - all mounted on the pickguard) and another 'mini' three-way selector switch (for neck selection) between the two necks with its own three-layer pickguard in the same material, secured by two screws. The two  potentiometers are both stamped "R137 9001" (CTS January 1990). The bass-edge of the guitar is protected by another specific, three-layer white over black plastic pickguard with similar decorative cut-outs, secured by three screws. Mosrite 'hat type' with "M" stamped on top, numbered from 0 to 5. The six-string guitar with original Mosrite bridge with six individually adjustable saddles and chrome-plated die-cast Mosely type vibrato/tailpiece unit. The octave guitar with original Mosrite bridge with six individually adjustable saddles and mahogany stop tailpiece secured by two screws. On the back of the six string guitar headstock written in pencil is: "Prototype J.M. 65 made in memory of my dear friend Joe Maphis Semie Mosely 1986". On the back of the octave guitar headstock written in pencil is: Hand made by Semie Mosely for Joe Maphis with love Semie Mosely 1986" This amazing and very attractive two-tone sunburst instrument is in near mint (9.25) condition with just a very light amount of fine finish checking and a few very small and insignificant surface marks. Housed in the original three-latch rectangular white hardshell case with black leather ends and black plush lining (8.00). This fine double-neck comes from the personal collection of Semie Mosely and was most likely finally completed in early 1990 - which is the date stamped on the two potentiometers. Joe Maphis had passed away on June 27th, 1986 and Semie had made this guitar as a tribute - inscribing each of the headstocks in Joe's memory… This was apparently the 'prototype' for a re-issue of this famous sixties guitar - hence the serial number "PRO 001".
