"The Tune company was founded in Japan in the early 1980s by bass maker and designer Fugitani Hatzukazu...Hatzukazu had previously been involved with the production of Fender replicas for another Japanese company, but set up his own operation in order to produce other designs. The 25-fret Bass Maniac, introduced in 1983, was notable for the access it gave players to the upper frets, made possible by an extended neck with 'heelless' joint. The overall style and ergonomics of the Tunes were widely copied in the 1980s, primarily by other oriental makers" (Tony Bacon and Barry Moorhouse, The Bass Book, p. 66).
