1978 Fender Jazz Bass.

This near mint, custom color, thirty-five-year-old bass guitar weighs 11.20 lbs. Contoured solid alder body. One-piece 'bound' fretted maple neck with a very narrow neck width (compared to the Precision Bass) of 1 1/2 inches, a comfortable medium profile and a scale length of 34 inches. Twenty original medium-jumbo frets and pearloid block position markers. Individual Fender tuners with cloverleaf metal buttons. Headstock decal with Fender in black with gold trim, "Jazz Bass" in black and serial number "S 8849944" below in black. Single round string tree. Three-bolt neck plate with the Fender backward "F" logo. Two eight-polepiece pickups with outputs of 7.01k and 7.45k. Four-layer (Antigua/black /white/black) plastic pickguard with ten screws and the thumb rest on the bass side. Three controls (two volume blend controls, one for each pickup, and one master tone control) and jack socket, all on metal plate adjoining pickguard and secured by three screws. Black plastic knobs with white markings. Combined four-saddle bridge/tailpiece. With both the original bass pickup and bridge pickup covers. The bridge cover with the original mute. The potentiometers are stamped "137 7849" & "137 7901" CTS, December 1988 & January 1989). There are a couple of very minor surface marks but overral this rare color bass guitar is in near mint condition. Housed in its original Fender three-latch black hardshell case with black leather ends and burgundy plush lining (9.00).

"After the introduction of the Jazzmaster in 1958, Fender needed an upscale model to augment the bass line. In 1960, Leo's new Jazz Bass borrowed the offset waist and part of the name from the Jazzmaster. It also featured a narrower neck width, which was faster playing than the Precision Bass" (J.W. Black and Albert Molinaro, The Fender Bass, p. 25).
