A Near Mint 1964 Martin 00-21 NY
1964 Martin 00-21 NY (wide fingerboard, 12 fret to body)
This 14 1/8-inch-wide, 4 1/8 inch-deep classical-style guitar weighs just 3.60 lbs. Back and sides with an 'X' braced, close-grain spruce top. Five-ply binding on the top of black, white and tortoiseshell, three-ply binding on the back of black, white and tortoiseshell. Mahogany neck with a wide classical nut width of 1 7/8 inches, a scale length of 25 inches and a very comfortable medium profile. Slotted-style headstock with gold "C F Martin & Co./Est. 1833" decal. Rear-facing open-back strip tuners with oval ivory buttons. Fretboard with 19 original medium-to-thin frets and small white dot side-position markers. Three sound hole rings in five-nine-five grouping. Checkered backstripe inlay. White bone bridge on base with Martin black pins with white dots. The model and serial numbers are stamped in blind on the end of the neck-block "00-21NY / 194164". There are a few miniscule and insignificant surface marks on the body and this one owner guitar is in strong near mint (9.25) condition. This is as near to a 'new' fifty year old Martin as one could ever wish for. There is some fret-wear on the first & second frets (high 'E' and 'B' only) and the fretboard show no sign of wear whatsoever. Housed in the original three-latch, shaped black softshell case with orange plush lining (9.00).
This is a surprisingly loud and unexpectedly responsive guitar.
"That same year [1961], Martin introduced two new "folk models", the 0-16NY and 00-21NY, with a sturdier X-braced top and the wide , 12-fret classical-style neck preferred by Hellerman. (NY stood for New York, possibly a reference to the booming folk scene in that city)… The 00-21NY averaged about 175 per year for five years before being discontinued… (Walter Carter. The Martin Book, p. 60).
