An All Original Near Mint 1964 'Black Face' Vibroverb
The Favorite Amp of Many of the Great Blues Guitarists…
1963 Fender Vibroverb AA763 (40 watts, 1 x 15).
This is a super rare, all original 40 watt 1964 "Black Face" Vibroverb AA 763 tube combo legend with its original 15 inch CTS Signature speaker. This incredible combo weighs 51 pounds. CTS (Chicago Telephone Supply) speakers were used occasionally in Fender amps until the mid-1960s. These are very high quality and exceptionally robust speakers that tonally lie between Jensens and Oxfords. The solid pine cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide x 20 inches high and the depth is 8 1/2 inches at the top expanding to 10 1/2 inches at the bottom. The amp has nine tubes: 1 x GZ34; 2 x 6L6GC; 3 x 12AT7; 3 x 7025. The potentiometers are stamped "304 6316", "304 6318", "304 6350" & "137 6330" (Stackpole, April, May and December 1963 and CTS, July 1963) and the original CTS Speaker is stamped "5815025 137 342" (CTS, October 1963). The letter code on the tube-chart is "NA" (N= 1964 and A = January). The serial number A00766 has been stamped onto the control panel.
A near mint, all original and super rare example of a '64 black tolex "Vibroverb AA 763" with that wonderful "Stevie Ray Vaughan" tone that everyone wants… It boasts 40 watts and has one perfect CTS fifteen-inch speaker. Black Tolex body, with silver sparkle Grill cloth. The black tolex is remarkably clean and the original handle shows no sign of wear. The amp has been recently serviced by Tone Zone Wizard Doug Anderson and is in all original (9.25) condition and perfect working order. Complete with a custom-made vinyl cover. All of the capacitors and resistors appear to be original as are the potentiometers. A fabulous example of one of the rarest and most highly sought-after early combo's which has long been a favorite amp of so many great blues guitarists…
In early 1963, Fender Electric Instruments offered its first guitar amp with on-board reverb. Called the Vibroverb, this amp was essentially a Fender Super with reverb. However, by the end of the year, the 2x10" model was discontinued and a completely new Vibroverb was offered. This model resembled Fender's Pro model with on-board reverb and had typical "blackface" appointments including LDR type tremolo. It sported a single 15 inch Jensen or JBL speaker and pumped out 40 watts of power. Despite its excellent sound, the second Vibroverb was also short-lived and was discontinued by the end of 1964. It is possible that during that time, Fender's other amplifiers, the Super Reverb, Vibrolux Reverb and Twin Reverb, were simply more popular and outsold the Vibroverb. Perhaps 1x15 combo amps had fallen out of favor by 1964. Despite its past performance record, the 1x15 Vibroverb has become a favorite amp of blues guitarists, most notably the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, and has attracted the attention of collectors for its sound and rarity. In fact, 1x15 reverb combo amps seem to be in favor once again as evidenced by models offered by current manufacturers, as well as by home made Vibroverb clones ("Vibroclone") that use Fender Pro, Super or Bandmaster Reverb chassis in a 1x15 combo cab.
