The Favorite Amp of Many of the Great Blues Guitarists…

This is a super rare, all original 40 watt 1964 "Black Face" Vibroverb AA 763 tube combo legend with its original 15 inch JBL Signature speaker. The solid pine cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide x 20 inches high and the depth is 9 1/2 inches at the top expanding to 10 1/2 inches at the bottom. The cabinet weighs 57 pounds. Nine tubes (2 x 6GT6L6; 4 x AX7/7025; 2 x AT7/6021; 1 x 5AR4/GZ34), potentiometers stamped "304 6334", "304 6348", "304 6350" & "137 6340" (Stackpole, August and December 1963 and CTS, October 1963), one fifteen-inch JBL Signature Speaker with stamped code "58057" on cone. The letter code on the tube-chart is "NB" (N= 1964 and B = February). The serial number A01116 has been stamped onto the control panel.

A near mint and super rare example of a '64 black tolex "Vibroverb AA 763" with that wonderful "Stevie Ray Vaughan" tone that everyone wants… It boasts 40 watts and has one perfect JBL D-130F fifteen-inch speaker. Black Tolex body, with silver sparkle Grill cloth. The black tolex is remarkably clean and the original handle shows no sign of wear. The amp has recently been thoroughly serviced by Miles Rose and the eight power amp and pre amp tubes have all been replaced with matched "Groove Tubes". The Rectifier tube is a "Sovtek 5AR4/GZ34". All of the capacitors and resistors appear to be original as are the potentiometers. A fabulous example of one of the rarest and most highly sought-after early combo's which has long been a favorite amp of so many great blues guitarists…

In early 1963, Fender Electric Instruments offered its first guitar amp with on-board reverb. Called the Vibroverb, this amp was essentially a Fender Super with reverb. However, by the end of the year, the 2x10" model was discontinued and a completely new Vibroverb was offered. This model resembled Fender's Pro model with on-board reverb and had typical "blackface" appointments including LDR type tremolo. It sported a single 15 inch Jensen or JBL speaker and pumped out 40 watts of power. Despite its excellent sound, the second Vibroverb was also short-lived and was discontinued by the end of 1964. It is possible that during that time, Fender's other amplifiers, the Super Reverb, Vibrolux Reverb and Twin Reverb, were simply more popular and outsold the Vibroverb. Perhaps 1x15 combo amps had fallen out of favor by 1964. Despite its past performance record, the 1x15 Vibroverb has become a favorite amp of blues guitarists, most notably the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, and has attracted the attention of collectors for its sound and rarity. In fact, 1x15 reverb combo amps seem to be in favor once again as evidenced by models offered by current manufacturers, as well as by home made Vibroverb clones ("Vibroclone") that use Fender Pro, Super or Bandmaster Reverb chassis in a 1x15 combo cab.
