An Incredibly Rare Series One Epiphone Crestwood Custom.
1960 Epiphone Crestwood Custom.
This incredibly rare guitar, which is like a cross between a Telecaster and a Les Paul SG Standard, weighs just 7.60 lbs. Solid mahogany 'slab' body with two symmetrical horns. One-piece mahogany neck with a fat nut width of 1 11/16 inches, a wonderful medium-to-fat profile and a standard Gibson scale length of 24 3/4 inches. Rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and inlaid pearl dot position markers. Serial number "0 3876" inked-on in yellow on back of headstock. Metal "Epiphone" headstock logo plate. Individual 'single-line' Kluson Deluxe tuners with later single-ring Keystone plastic buttons (five with "D-169400 / Patent No." and the low 'E' tuner with "2356766 / Pat Appld."). Two patent number mini-humbucker pickups with outputs of 7.97k and 7.17k, each with a rectangular black label on the underside "Patent No. / 2,737,842". Three-layer white over black plastic "batwing" pickguard with silver Epiphone stylized "E" logo and four screws. Four controls (two volume, two tone) plus three-way selector switch. The potentiometers are all stamped "134 844" (Centralab, November 1958). Black plastic knobs with ribbed sides and metal tops. Jack socket on treble side of guitar. ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic retainer bridge with separate stud tailpiece. All hardware nickel-plated. At one time, this guitar was fitted with an Epiphone vibrato, which has since been removed and as a result, there are three holes on the top of the guitar, one in front of and two behind the stud tailpiece. There is some slight edge wear, and the plating on the stud tailpiece is somewhat worn, otherwise this super rare guitar is in strong (8.75) excellent plus condition. Housed in its original Epiphone three-latch, pale beige and brown leather softshell case with brown velvet lining (8.50).
We believe that this super rare guitar was made in 1958/59 but did not leave the factory until early 1961. We say this because apart from the removal of an added Vibrato at some time - the guitar is 100 original. The solder joins have never been touched and there has never been any repair or refinishing. Five of the Kluson deluxe tuners are from 1958-60 and the low 'E' tuner is from early 1958. The tuner buttons have been changed for the correct replacement Keystone buttons. Also the two mini humbuckers have "Patent # stickers" which to the best of our knowledge were not introduced until early 1961. There is a website at: http://epiphonewiki.com/index.php/Crestwood which actually features our guitar…
This guitar, in a wonderful two-tone Sunburst, is the only Series One Epiphone Crestwood we've ever seen, and it sounds absolutely amazing! Introduced in 1958, this is the last year that they made this shape: 1 3/4 inch thick body with squared edges. In 1959, the Crestwood was renamed the Crestwood Custom, with a 1 3/8 inch deep body with rounded edges.
