An Exceptionally Fine 1962 PAF Les Paul SG Standard 'Ebony-Block'

1962 Gibson Les Paul SG Standard - Ebony Block

This sixty-two year old, 'featherweight' 13-inch-wide Les Paul SG Standard weighs just 6.40 lbs. Solid Honduras mahogany body with beveled edges. One-piece mahogany neck with a nut width of 1 11/16 inches, a standard Gibson scale length of 24 3/4 inches and a wonderful '62 medium-to-thick profile. Brazilian rosewood fretboard with 22 original jumbo frets and inlaid pearl trapezoid (crown) position markers. Headstock with inlaid pearl "Gibson" logo and pearl crown inlay. Three-layer, black over white plastic bell-shaped truss-rod cover with "Les Paul" engraved in white. Individual single-line Kluson Deluxe tuners, each one stamped on the underside "D-169400" with double-ring tulip-shaped Keystone plastic buttons. Serial number "95098" impressed into the back of the headstock. Two original Gibson (double-black) PAF humbucking pickups, each with a black label "Patent Applied For" on the underside, with outputs of 7.34k and 7.57k. Original "MR 491 / M-69 7" and "MR 490 / M-69 8" black plastic pickup rings. Five-layer black over white plastic pickguard with five screws. Small black plastic neck-end cover with two screws. Four controls (two volume, two tone) plus three-way pickup selector switch, all on lower treble bout. The potentiometers are stamped "134 6244" (Centralab October 1962). Black plastic bell-shaped knobs with metal tops. ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic non-retainer bridge with nylon saddles, pearl inlaid ebony block vibrato tailpiece with perforated 'flat-arm'. All hardware nickel-plated. The rich cherry finish on this guitar is totally unfaded. There are a few small indentations and 'dings' on the body, mainly on the edges., the most noticeable being a 1/4 inch 'dent' on the lower bass edge near the control cover. The top right-hand corner of the headstock face has a small sliver of wood missing, otherwise this super rare, all original 'very best' of the SG Les Paul Standards is in exceptionally fine (9.00) condition. The original jumbo frets and Brazilian rosewood fretboard show very little wear and the original PAF's have never had their covers touched. Housed in its original Gibson four-latch "Faultless" shaped black hardshell case with orange plush lining (9.00).

The Les Paul SG Standard was introduced in 1961 as the 'modern-day' replacement for the iconic (but poorly selling at that time) 1958-1960 'Burst'. The examples from 1961 through early 1963 had the "Les Paul" designations and were fitted with the original 'PAF' pickups as the the discontinued 'burst' - one problem - Gibson in their infinite wisdom had fitted the new SG Les Paul with a rather wierd sideways tremolo system (nobody liked it). Gibson never offered a 'stud-tail' version of the SG Les Paul Standard - BUT - only in 1962 - they offered a few examples with a pearl inlaid ebony block vibrato tailpiece. unfortunately there were only a few shipped and this is only the second example that we have handled in the past ten years. These are the 'ultimate' SG Les Paul Standards.
